BASS, ALFIE

Contributed by: The James Bond Movie Encyclopedia by Steven Jay Rubin

(April 8, 1916–July 15, 1987): British character comedian, best remembered as Shorty in The Lavender Hill Mob (1951), who went on to do three Bond cameos. As the astonished drunk with wine bottle in hand, he does classic double takes at Bond’s miraculous feats: in The Spy Who Loved Me, as 007’s Lotus Esprit submarine car emerges onto the Sardinian beach; in St. Mark’s Square in Moonraker, as his gondola hovercraft passes by; and at a Cortina ski resort in For Your Eyes Only, as Bond is pursued by enemy skiers. Bass is credited only for Moonraker, as the “Consumptive Italian.” Bass made his feature film debut in director Charles Frend’s romantic comedy Johnny Frenchman (1945).
