HAGGIS, PAUL

(March 10, 1953–     ): Two-time Academy Award–winning Canadian screenwriter and producer who cowrote Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace with Neal Purvis and Robert Wade.

Born in London, Ontario, Haggis worked in television for many years—creating, among other series, Walker, Texas Ranger (195 episodes, 1993–2001)—before making his motion picture writing and directing debut on the musical drama Red Hot (1993). His breakout motion picture hit was Crash (2005), which won Haggis two Oscars, for Best Picture (shared with producer Cathy Schulman) and Best Original Screenplay (shared with cowriter Bobby Moresco). He also scored a Best Director nomination that year. The previous year, he received an Oscar nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay for that year’s Best Picture winner, Million Dollar Baby. He was the first screenwriter to write back-to-back Best Picture winners.
