NEWTON, WAYNE

Contributed by: The James Bond Movie Encyclopedia by Steven Jay Rubin

(April 3, 1942–     ): Superstar Las Vegas singer, entertainer, and recording artist who portrayed lecherous televangelist Joe Butcher in Licence to Kill. Newton is well cast in what could have been a distracting role as the seemingly devoted religious peddler who is actually a front for the cocaine empire of Franz Sanchez (Robert Davi).

Born in Norfolk, Virginia, Newton made his motion picture debut in director Gerd Oswald’s drama 80 Steps to Jonah (1969). His trademark tunes, such as “Danke Schoen,” have been featured on numerous film and TV soundtracks.
