SPIES ON SCREEN: What 120 Years of Spy Movies Reveal — with Paul Burke

Spy movies have always done more than entertain us. Paul Burke, author of Spies on Screen: From Silent to Streaming, joins Dan and Tom this week. Paul has spent years tracking more than a century of spy movies and shows. His research shows something surprising. Every decade of spy movies quietly reflects the fears of its time.

Paul breaks down patterns most of us never notice. One seduction trope keeps reappearing, and it goes back further than you might think. Some brilliant spy movies got overshadowed by a bigger release the same year. Others feel like they were written yesterday, even though they are decades old.

Dan and Tom dig into some of Paul’s personal picks from the book. A few of these spy movies you have probably never heard of before today. One of them might become your next favorite rewatch.

They also trace how spy stories jump from the page to the movie screen to the stage. Paul shares where he thinks the genre goes from here.

Press play to find out why spy movies have been telling us the truth for over 120 years.

What you will hear in this episode:

  • A seduction trope spy movies have used since 1918 and still use today.
  • A forgotten 1970s political thriller Paul says is as sharp as the big ones everyone remembers.
  • How a real World War II mission became a book, two movies, and now a touring musical.
  • The spy movie Dan and Tom call their best pick in eight years of the show.
  • Paul’s picks for the spy movies he wants Dan and Tom to cover next.
