I WAS A SPY (1933): The Incredible True Story Behind the Spy Movie

What would you do if saving enemy lives by day led to risking your own by night? That is the dilemma at the heart of I WAS A SPY, the 1933 British spy movie starring Madeleine Carroll. In this episode of Cracking the Code of Spy Movies, Dan and Tom decode a World War I thriller with a twist. Almost all of it really happened.

The movie is based on the memoir of Marthe Cnockaert, a young Belgian nurse in a German-occupied town. She cared for wounded German soldiers. She also passed secrets to the British. The movie even keeps her real name.

Dan and Tom look at how director Victor Saville builds suspense without big battles or chase scenes. Much of it comes from two people in a room, both smiling, both hiding something. Madeleine Carroll plays Marthe with a cool calm that would soon catch Alfred Hitchcock’s eye. Conrad Veidt is the German commandant who could expose her at any moment. Herbert Marshall, Edmund Gwenn, and Nigel Bruce round out a cast full of familiar faces.

The guys also dig into the story behind the camera. A British studio bet big on this one, hoping to prove it could match Hollywood. Did the gamble pay off? And does this classic spy movie still hold up more than 90 years later?

In this episode, you’ll discover:

  • The small, everyday object that put a skilled spy in terrible danger
  • Why the German army pinned a medal on the very woman who was spying on them
  • The legal scare that sent the script to the real Marthe, page by page
  • Which cast member helped write the movie, then became famous for a very different role
  • How world events in 1933 gave Conrad Veidt’s part an eerie real-life echo
