BENSON, MARTIN

(August 10, 1918–February 28, 2010): Sinister-looking British character actor who portrayed doomed mob kingpin Mr. Solo, who has a “pressing engagement” in Goldfinger.

A native of London, Benson garnered the first film credit of his lengthy career as Count Stephan Mikla in director Harold French’s drama The Blind Goddess (1948). Benson’s other feature appearances include The King and I (1956), as Kralahome; The 3 Worlds of Gulliver (1960), as villainous Flimnap; Exodus (1960); Gorgo (1961); Cleopatra (1963); A Shot in the Dark (1964); and The Omen (1976), as doomed Father Spiletto.
