CHILES, LOIS

(April 15, 1947–     ): American leading lady and former fashion model who portrayed brainy and slinky CIA agent Holly Goodhead in Moonraker.

Born in Houston, Chiles made her film debut as the female lead in director Michael Schultz’s drama Together for Days (1973), which also marked the film debut of actor Samuel L. Jackson. Although that film was not a hit at the box office, her next movie—the Barbra Streisand / Robert Redford starrer The Way We Were (1973)—was a smash, with Chiles playing Redford’s rich girlfriend Carol Ann. Some of Chiles’s other feature film credits include The Great Gatsby (1974), reteaming with Robert Redford); Coma (1978); Death on the Nile (1978); Sweet Liberty (1986); Creepshow 2 (1987); Broadcast News (1987); Twister (1989); and Speed 2: Cruise Control (1997).

In 2005, Chiles married New York investor and philanthropist Richard Gilder, and she retired from acting.
