FUKANAGA, CARY JOJI

Contributed by: The James Bond Movie Encyclopedia by Steven Jay Rubin

(July 10, 1977–     ): Stylish American film and television director, writer, and producer who became the first Yank to helm an Eon Productions 007 pic when he came aboard No Time to Die.

Born in Oakland, California (his father is of Japanese descent, his mother of Swedish ancestry), Fukunaga made his feature directorial debut on the Spanish-language crime drama Sin Nombre (2009). However, what put him on Hollywood’s radar was his yeoman work directing the first season of the HBO television series True Detective (2014), for which he won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series. He followed that success with the acclaimed African war drama Beasts of No Nation (2015), which he wrote, produced, and directed (and which also featured actor Idris Elba, who has been touted as a future James Bond candidate).
