LEITER, CLARENCE

Contributed by: The James Bond Movie Encyclopedia by Steven Jay Rubin

British agent portrayed by veteran character actor Michael Pate who joins James Bond (Barry Nelson) on a mission against Soviet master spy Le Chiffre (Peter Lorre) in the CBS TV adaptation of Casino Royale (1954).

In essence, Leiter is a British version of Fleming’s original American CIA agent, Felix Leiter—a logical move, since the adaptation made James Bond into an American intelligence operative. Leiter is an agent of Station S of the British Secret Service—specialists on the Soviet Union—working with the French Deuxième Bureau and the American Combined Intelligence Agency. His mission is to supply Bond with 26 million francs so he can bankrupt Le Chiffre at the baccarat table in Monte Carlo.
