MUTUAL DISARMAMENT TALKS

Contributed by: The Complete James Bond Movie Encyclopedia by Steven Jay Rubin

Subject of a heated debate between diplomatic General Gogol (WALTER GOTELL) and hardline fanatic General Orlov (STEVEN BERKOFF) before a tribunal of Soviet leaders in Octopussy. Gogol feels that NATO proposals do not compromise the defensive alignment of the Soviet Eastern Bloc. Orlov is in favor of a massive military invasion of the West.

When Gogol mentions the possibility of nuclear retaliation, Orlov sneers at his comment, claiming that the Western democracies are decadent and incapable of defending themselves against a superior military force. The Soviet premier (PAUL HARDWICK, a Leonid Brezhnev look-alike) enters the debate on Gogol’s side, ending the discussion. He predicts that global socialism will be achieved peaceably.
