PRYCE, JONATHAN

(June 1, 1947–     ): Academy Award–nominated Welsh character actor who portrayed megalomaniac billionaire Elliot Carver in Tomorrow Never Dies.

Born in Holywell, Flintshire, Pryce made his big-screen debut as Joseph Manasse in director Stuart Rosenberg’s pre–World War II drama Voyage of the Damned (1976), which also featured Bond players David de Keyser (Diamonds Are Forever), Milo Sperber (The Spy Who Loved Me), Max von Sydow (Never Say Never Again), and Emily Bolton (Moonraker). Pryce was so memorable as the bumbling bureaucrat in Terry Gilliam’s Brazil (1985), and made an impression more recently as the pious High Sparrow in HBO’s Game of Thrones (12 episodes, 2015–2016). He has given indelible performances in many films, including Something Wicked This Way Comes (1983); The Adventures of Baron Munchausen (1988); Glengarry Glen Ross (1992); The Age of Innocence (1993); Evita (1996), as Juan Perón; Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End (2007); and The Wife (2017).

Pryce received his Oscar nomination for playing one of the two leads in director Fernando Meirelles’s The Two Popes (2019).
