REMOTE-CONTROL AIRWAYS

Contributed by: The Complete James Bond Movie Encyclopedia by Steven Jay Rubin

A euphemism for Ernst Stavro Blofeld‘s helicopter, which operates on remote when its pilot is killed in the For Your Eyes Only teaser. What Bond (ROGER MOORE) thinks is going to be an urgent trip to London becomes, in Blofeld’s hands, a ride of terror.

Somehow, 007 is able to break out of the rear section of the helicopter, enter the cockpit, rip out the remote-pilot switching, and take control. He then chases the bald-pated, wheelchair-bound Telly Savalas look-alike and impales his wheelchair on the chopper’s skid.

The last we see of Blofeld, he’s being unceremoniously dumped into a giant industrial chimney, a fate from which he won’t return this time—although, technically speaking, Jack Schwartzman brought him back in the guise of Max von Sydow, in Never Say Never Again, for the rival Bond company.
