TAFLER, SYDNEY

(July 31, 1916–November 8, 1979): British character actor and relative by marriage of director Lewis Gilbert, who cast him as the captain of the supertanker Liparus in The Spy Who Loved Me.

Tafler, a London native, made his uncredited motion picture debut as an RAF officer in director Anthony Asquith’s wartime comedy thriller Bombsight Stolen (1941). His first credited big-screen role was playing Morry Hyams in director Robert Hamer’s crime drama, It Always Rains on Sunday (1947).
