TRICK GONDOLA

Contributed by: The Complete James Bond Movie Encyclopedia by Steven Jay Rubin

James Bond’s (ROGER MOORE) method of transportation through the Venice canals in Moonraker. It helps him fight off a motorboat full of Hugo Drax‘s (MICHAEL LONSDALE) thugs.

A cousin of the Aston Martin, the Little Nellie autogyro, and the Lotus Esprit, the trick gondola is actually the most ridiculous of all of James Bond’s gadgets. Although its conversion from pure oar-driven power to motor launch is plausible, the sequence in which the gondola inflates to Hovercraft size and floats through St. Mark’s Square on a cushion of air rates as probably the most idiotic event in the series.

Moore handles the looks of thousands of bystanders with typical upper-class élan, but a double-taking pigeon is just a bit too much for a sequence that is already outrageous. How much of a secret agent is James Bond, anyway?
