DAY OF THE DEAD

(a.k.a. Dia de los Muertos): Mexican holiday often celebrated with elaborate parades and pageantry, which becomes the backdrop for the Spectre pre-credits teaser set in Mexico City. Working without MI6 authorization, James Bond (Daniel Craig) assassinates terrorist Marco Sciarra (Alessandro Cremona) during a tense mano a mano inside a helicopter that threatens to kill festivalgoers below. Thanks to the modern world’s ubiquitous surveillance cameras—not to mention everyone’s handy iPhone—it’s another example of Bond flouting the “secret” aspect of being a secret agent. Certainly his highest-profile incident since he killed another terrorist inside a foreign embassy compound in Casino Royale.
