(October 1, 1903–November 20, 1983): Chinese American character actor who portrayed sinister industrialist Hai Fat in The Man with the Golden Gun. Though Chinese by ancestry and Hawaiian by birth, Loo was the go-to Japanese villain in scores of wartime movies throughout the 1930s and 1940s.
He made his credited feature debut as Charlie San in director Richard Thorpe’s murder mystery The Secrets of Wu Sin (1932). Although Loo could sneer with the best Japanese Army screen villains, he could also play sympathetic characters, as he did in Sam Fuller’s The Steel Helmet (1951), as American Sergeant Tanaka, and Love Is a Many Splendored Thing (1955).
