PATE, MICHAEL

(February 26, 1920–September 1, 2008; birth name: Edward John Pate): Prolific Australian-born character actor who portrayed Clarence Leiter, a British agent who assists an American James Bond (Barry Nelson) in the 1954 live television adaptation of Casino Royale.

A native of Drummoyne, New South Wales, Pate made his credited motion picture debut as Shane O’Riordan in the Australian adventure drama The Rugged O’Riordans (1949). His many feature film credits include Julius Caesar (1953), as Flavius; Hondo (1953), as Vittorio; The Court Jester (1955), as Sir Locksley; PT 109 (1963), as Lieutenant Reginald Evans, coastwatcher; and Major Dundee (1965), as Apache leader Sierra Charriba.
