Contributed by: The James Bond Movie Encyclopedia by Steven Jay Rubin

(January 5, 1945–     ): Eclectic Canadian film director who helmed Tomorrow Never Dies. A native of Ottawa, Ontario, Spottiswoode started in Hollywood as an editor on films such as Sam Peckinpah’s Straw Dogs (1971) and Karel Reisz’s atmospheric The Gambler (1974) before making his directing debut on the low-budget horror film Terror Train (1980). In 1983, he directed the critically acclaimed Under Fire, a political drama that took Nick Nolte, Gene Hackman, and Joanna Cassidy into the hell of the Nicaraguan revolution. His acclaimed 1995 television miniseries Hiroshima is credited with dramatically increasing the profile of the American premium cable channel Showtime, which aired the production.
