A man with no memory and a stack of fake passports changed spy movies forever. In this episode, Dan and Tom decode THE BOURNE IDENTITY, the 2002 movie that traded tuxedos for real streets and real fights. Matt Damon plays a man pulled from the sea with two bullets in his back. He has no name and no past. All he has is a bank number hidden under his skin. Soon he finds out he has deadly skills he can’t explain. And someone at the CIA wants him dead.
Director Doug Liman took Robert Ludlum’s 1980 novel and tossed out most of it. What’s left is a lean, smart thriller. Franka Potente, Chris Cooper, Clive Owen and Brian Cox round out a terrific cast.
Dan and Tom dig into how this movie was rewritten, reshot and delayed before it reached theaters. They trace the classic spy movies that shaped it. Then they follow its fingerprints all the way to James Bond.
Plus, they ask:
- Is it even a spy movie?
- Does that shaky camera work?
- And is this the best Bourne movie of them all?
Dan and Tom don’t agree on everything, so press play and pick a side.
In this episode, you’ll learn:
• How 9/11 reshaped the movie months before it reached theaters
• The surprising truth about the guards Bourne takes down at the consulate
• What a real Washington scandal has to do with Treadstone
• The A-list stars who were in line for the role before Matt Damon
• The quiet scene the studio cut, and the two men who fought to bring it back
