87 MILLION FRANCS

Contributed by: The Complete James Bond Movie Encyclopedia by Steven Jay Rubin

The total sum won by James Bond (BARRY NELSON) in the Monte Carlo baccarat game with Soviet masterspy Le Chiffre (PETER LORRE) in the TV film ” Casino Royale.” That amount is given to Bond in the form of a check, which he hides behind the brass number-plate on his hotel suite door.

Desperate to get back his money, Le Chiffre captures Bond and tortures him to find out where he’s hidden the check. Also captured is Valerie Mathis (LINDA CHRISTIAN), Bond’s ex-lover and an agent with the French Deuxième Bureau who can’t bear seeing 007 tortured. She eventually admits that she saw Bond with a screwdriver in his hand, information that leads Le Chiffre to recover the check.

Incarcerated in his hotel suite bathroom and left alone for a key moment, Bond uses the razor blade hidden in Le Chiffre’s cigarette case—which the Russian leaves on the edge of the bathtub—and unties himself. In a desperate fight, he manages to shoot and kill Le Chiffre and one of his thugs.
