BARTLETT, RUBY

Contributed by: The James Bond Movie Encyclopedia by Steven Jay Rubin

A British patient at the Bleuchamp Institute for Allergy Research, portrayed by actress Angela Scoular in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. Ruby’s from Morecambe Bay, Lancashire, and she’s terribly allergic to chicken. She also develops a passionate interest in James Bond (George Lazenby), who has infiltrated the institute as heraldry expert Sir Hilary Bray, Baronet. She astutely recognizes his title as designating “a kind of inferior sort of baron,” but “Hilary” doesn’t take it as an insult.

Patients are not allowed to give their room numbers to strangers, so Ruby writes hers in lipstick on 007’s inner thigh (it’s helpful that he’s wearing a kilt). Later, Bond manages to sneak into her room. They’re about to make love when Blofeld (Telly Savalas) begins Ruby’s nightly brainwashing regimen—revealing the institute’s true purpose.
