BENZ, COMMISSAR

Contributed by: The James Bond Movie Encyclopedia by Steven Jay Rubin

Mustachioed Russian agent based in Istanbul, portrayed by actor Peter Bayliss in From Russia with Love. As the agent in charge of surveillance at the local railroad station, it is Benz who spots Bond (Sean Connery) and Tatiana Romanova (Daniela Bianchi) as they board the Orient Express with Ali Kerim Bey (Pedro Armendariz).

To ensure a safe journey for his friends, Kerim Bey later tricks Benz into opening his door for the ticket agent, only to brandish a loaded pistol in the Russian’s face. Trussed up like a turkey, Benz is left alone with Kerim Bey, who will keep the Russian company until Bond escapes across the Turkish/Bulgarian border. Meanwhile, Benz gets to hear Kerim Bey’s life story.

Unfortunately, these events are observed by SPECTRE assassin Donald Grant (Robert Shaw) who eventually murders both Kerim Bey and Benz, making it appear as if they killed each other.
