CARLYLE, ROBERT

(April 14, 1961–     ): Scottish character actor who portrayed doomed villain Victor “Renard” Zokas in The World Is Not Enough. Carlyle achieved something quite rare in the Bond series—evoking sympathy for the villain. It’s not easy to get on with your daily villainy with a bullet lodged in your brain, especially one that is robbing you of your senses. Sure, you’re impervious to pain, but it plays hell in the boudoir.

A native of Glasgow, Carlyle first came to the attention of American audiences when he portrayed Franco in the tense drama Trainspotting (1996). However, it was the hit dramedy The Full Monty (1997) that really put him on international radar. More recently, he played John Lennon, uncredited, in Danny Boyle’s whimsical Yesterday (2019).
