GIANNINI, GIANCARLO

(August 1, 1942–     ): Academy Award–nominated Italian actor who portrayed Rene Mathis, local liaison to James Bond (Daniel Craig) in Montenegro in Casino Royale. He returned in Quantum of Solace, helping Bond infiltrate the SPECTRE organization.

Giannini received his Academy Award nomination for Best Actor in a Leading Role for Pasqualino Settebellezze (1975). Born in La Spezia, Liguria, Giannini first appeared on the big screen under the name John Charlie Johns in the crime thriller Libido (1965). The following year, he portrayed the title character in an Italian television miniseries production of David Copperfield. He made his English-language debut as Saverio in director Mauro Bolognini’s comedy Arabella (1967).
