JOHN, GOTTFRIED

(August 29, 1942–September 1, 2014): Prolific German actor who portrayed ruthless general Arkady Grigorovich Ourumov, head of satellite operations for northern Russia in GoldenEye. Ourumov is actually a top operative of the Janus crime syndicate and an ally of Alec Trevelyan (Sean Bean).

A native of Berlin, John made his motion picture debut in director Claude Autant-Lara’s World War II drama Between Love and Duty (1960). His first role in an English-language feature was as Perebrodov in Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s period drama Despair (1978). The following year, he portrayed Willi Klenze in Fassbender’s The Marriage of Maria Braun.
