TWISS, PETER

(July 23, 1921–August 31, 2011; birth name: Lionel Peter Twiss): British test pilot and World War II Royal Air Force veteran who was the first man to fly a jet aircraft faster than 1,000 mph. Born in Lindfield, Sussex, England, and later an employee of Fairey Marine, he was put in charge of the motorboat flotilla at Crinan, Scotland in From Russia with Love, and drove one of the speedboats.
