VESPER

The password that James Bond (Daniel Craig) inputs into the encrypted server of Basel Bank representative Mr. Mendel (Ludger Pistor) before the Texas hold’em tournament in Casino Royale. It’s how he retrieves his winnings at the end of the tournament, which at the table totaled $115 million but is somehow raised to $120 million when Mendel comes calling.

“Vesper” is also the name that Bond gives to a cocktail he orders during the tournament. Taken from Ian Fleming’s novel, it consists of three parts gin (Gordon’s is 007’s choice), one part vodka, and half part of Lillet. The ingredients are shaken over ice until cold, then served in a cocktail glass with a slice of lemon peel for garnish. Practically the entire table at the poker game orders the drink, with Felix Leiter (Jeffrey Wright) requesting his without “the fruit.”
