Francisco Scaramanga’s diminutive servant, portrayed by French actor and Fantasy Island veteran Hervé Villechaize in The Man with the Golden Gun. Nick Nack perfectly proves that you don’t have to be seven feet tall to give James Bond (Roger Moore) big trouble.
Villechaize was a throwback to such distinctive, mysterious character actors of the 1930s as Sydney Greenstreet, Peter Lorre, and John Carradine. In Golden Gun, Nick Nack is fascinating to watch in his tiny waiter’s outfit, delivering Tabasco sauce to the sunbathing Scaramanga (Christopher Lee) and Andrea (Maud Adams), or munching peanuts behind Bond at the kickboxing match. He’s also quick on his feet as he plays with the controls that operate the “fun house” on Scaramanga’s island or is chased around Bond’s stateroom on the Chinese junk. Eventually, the pesky villain is netted and strung up in the junk’s rigging, proving another adage: that what goes up—even if it doesn’t go up very far—must eventually come down.
