(April 29, 1917–1987): Indian-born character actor, adept at playing exotic henchmen and villains, who portrayed one of the guards of Dr. No (Joseph Wiseman) in the first Bond film and came back in The Spy Who Loved Me to play Sandor the assassin. In the 1967 Casino Royale spoof, he played one of the Indian attendants of Mata Bond (Joanna Pettet).
A native of Bombay who arrived in England in 1936, Reid started his career as a professional wrestler, then made his motion picture debut as Mac in director Francis Searle’s crime drama Undercover Girl (1958). Three years later, he was Omar the bald-pated servant to Donald O’Connor’s title character in The Wonders of Aladdin, and it was Reid who was neutralized by Charlton Heston’s Major Matt Lewis during a Boxer sword-fighting exhibition in 55 Days at Peking (1963).
Reid returned to his native India late in life, and his death is shrouded in mystery. Some sources say that he died of a heart attack in 1982, but his family insists that he died somewhere on the subcontinent in 1987.
