LA BANQUE SUISSE DE L’INDUSTRIE, BILBAO

Contributed by: The Complete James Bond Movie Encyclopedia by Steven Jay Rubin

Nefarious Swiss bank branch, operating out of Bilbao, Spain, featured in the teaser for The World Is Not Enough. Its suspicious bank manager has recovered $5 million for construction magnate Sir Robert King (DAVID CALDER), who was unable to use the money to ransom his daughter, Elektra (SOPHIE MARCEAU) from kidnapper Renard (ROBERT CARLYLE).

In reality, the money is part of a plot to kill Sir Robert, hatched by Renard (ROBERT CARLYLE) and his new accomplice —thanks to Stockholm Syndrome—kidnap victim Elektra. Like the SPECTRE agents in From Russia with Love, who tempted 007 with a Lektor decoding machine, Victor “Renard” Zokas is counting on M sending Bond (PIERCE BROSNAN) to retrieve the money. And she does. Unbeknownst to Bond, the money is boobytrapped to explode when Sir Robert gets near it (thanks to a lapel-pin transmitter supplied by his own daughter).
