PALMYRA

Contributed by: The James Bond Movie Encyclopedia by Steven Jay Rubin

Huge seaside Nassau estate belonging to Emilio Largo (Adolfo Celi) in Thunderball. In one of its two swimming pools, Largo keeps his deadly Golden Grotto sharks (actually tiger sharks). Footage of the estate was shot at the Philadelphia summer home of Nicholas Sullivan and his family.

Palmyra is also the name of the North African estate/fortress of Maximilian Largo (Klaus Maria Brandauer) in Never Say Never Again. Traveling there from southern France as a guest on Largo’s Flying Saucer yacht, Bond is later captured and shackled to the wall of a medieval dungeon filled with bleached bones and vultures. He breaks his bonds, thanks to his laser-equipped watch, steals a horse, and rescues Domino Petachi (Kim Basinger) from a group of sleazy Arab traders. Chased across the ramparts of the fortress, Bond, Domino, and the horse dive into the Mediterranean as an American nuclear submarine blasts the traders with its deck cannon.
