“UNDER THE MANGO TREE”

Contributed by: The James Bond Movie Encyclopedia by Steven Jay Rubin

Rhythmic island tune—reminiscent of “The Girl from Ipanema”—that is featured in Dr. No. In capturing the romantic mood of the tropics, “Under the Mango Tree” is one of the series’ best songs, and in the absence of an opening-titles song, it really is the theme of Dr. No.

It’s sung at various times by Byron Lee and the Dragonaires at Puss-Feller’s club and by Honey Ryder (Ursula Andress) and Bond (Sean Connery) on the beach at Crab Key—the only time that Connery ever sings in the series. A breezy instrumental version plays at the end of the movie. Credit composer Monty Norman for bringing this memorable tune to the series.
