HAVELOCK, MELINA

Contributed by: The James Bond Movie Encyclopedia by Steven Jay Rubin

Tall, statuesque, hauntingly beautiful half-Greek woman with a crossbow, portrayed by Carole Bouquet in For Your Eyes Only. The daughter of British marine archaeologist Timothy Havelock (Jack Hedley) and native Greek Iona Havelock (Toby Robins), Melina doesn’t know that her father is secretly working for the British in an effort to salvage the sunken St. Georges surveillance ship.

When the Havelocks are killed by Cuban hit man Hector Gonzales (Stefan Kalipha), Melina vows to avenge their deaths with her crossbow. She kills Gonzales, but, unfortunately, she also stumbles into a much bigger plot, involving 007 (Roger Moore) and a Soviet-British race to recover the ATAC device that was lost aboard the St. Georges.

Involved in the salvage operation—using her father’s Neptune submarine—Melina and Bond are later captured and nearly flayed on a reef, in a scene right out of the novel Live and Let Die. Surviving, she joins 007 on the final mission to St. Cyril’s church atop Greece’s famous Meteora cliffs.
