PETACHI, CAPTAIN JACK

Traitorous US Air Force officer and brother of Maximilian Largo’s mistress Domino (Kim Basinger), portrayed by Gavan O’Herlihy in Never Say Never Again. Attached to the ground staff of a cruise missile base in England, Petachi is bribed by SPECTRE and forced to undergo an unusual corneal implant operation that will give him the same right eye print as the president of the United States. With that capability, he can pass a top-level security check and arm two cruise missiles with nuclear warheads.

Petachi is assigned to “cruel mistress” Fatima Blush (Barbara Carrera). His addiction to heroin and her sexual demands gradually turn him into a nervous, pathetic mess. When Petachi sneaks a cigarette in his room at the Shrublands health clinic—an act that supposedly clouds his implant—Blush beats him up, then offers him a significant drug dose if he’ll practice the security maneuver that will eventually arm the missiles. Bond (Sean Connery) observes this scuffle and begins to suspect Petachi.

Later, while searching Petachi’s room, 007 finds a book of matches with the Largo emblem on the cover, a clue that leads him to Largo’s home base in the Bahamas. Petachi completes his bomb-arming mission and drives off the base. Blush arrives to congratulate him but tosses a snake into his car instead. Losing control, Petachi slams head-on into a building and dies in the collision.
