ST. CYRIL’S

Contributed by: The James Bond Movie Encyclopedia by Steven Jay Rubin

Fictional monastery/fortress atop the steep Meteora cliffs in Greece, featured in For Your Eyes Only. In the film it’s a personal retreat for Russian agent and heroin smuggler Aris Kristatos (Julian Glover). Bond (Roger Moore) learns from his friend and compatriot Milos Columbo (Topol) that the abandoned monastery used to be a favorite hiding place for the Greek resistance during World War II. Tipped off by Max the parrot, who keeps uttering the name “St. Cyril’s,” Bond, Melina Havelock (Carole Bouquet), Columbo, and his men, all disguised as monks, assault the fortress and overwhelm Kristatos’s garrison, stealing back the Brits’ top-secret ATAC computer, which 007 destroys before it falls into Russian hands.

This sequence was filmed on location at Meteora’s Holy Trinity Monastery—against the wishes of the local clergy, who even hung laundry over their buildings to disrupt the shoot. Stuntman Rick Sylvester, veteran of the ski jump in The Spy Who Loved Me, doubled James Bond during his precarious climb to the top of the Meteora cliff.
