Rick English Talks Kingsman Stunts- with movie clips

Rick English talks KINGSMAN stunts – with movie clips!  Rick joins Dan and Tom on their show Cracking the Code of Spy Movies.   Along the way, we play clips of the action that Rick describes. Rick is the award-winning stunt performer who doubled Colin Firth in the first two KINGSMAN movies.  He’s been doing stunts in movies for over 23 years.

RICK’S ROLE AS A DOUBLE

So, what is it like to double a star? How much of the stunt work did Colin Firth do, versus Rick? Was Rick hurt doing any of the stunts?  What is the role of wirework in his scenes? How many cuts did the church fight scene take? What is it like to jump out a window ahead of an explosion? How did they get the character Whiskey into the meat grinder in KINGSMAN: THE GOLDEN CIRCLE? Finally, what is an antitragus?

Rick talks about these issues while focusing on the church fight and the bar fight (manners maketh man) in KINGSMAN: THE SECRET SERVICE.

HOW TECHNOLOGY IS CHANGING THE GAME

We also discuss how new facial recognition and replacement technologies popped up on the market just before this movie was made.  That meant that the way he had to film these scenes was different than he’d experienced in the past.  Listen to find out how. It is fascinating to hear how technology is changing the filming of stunts.

Plus, Tom talks about how watching the church fight scene frame-by-frame helped him to identify some of the places where facial replacement was used.  Don’t worry, we don’t go through it frame-by-frame here. But, once you listen, if you watch that scene, you may be able to pick up a few of these replacements as well.

This episode helps the moviegoer understand the role of the stunt performer and how they are used. Rick explains some of the techniques they used for some of the specific stunts.

The King’s Man

The third Kingsman movie, The King’s Man was released in 2021. It was a departure from the first two Kingsman movies in that it was a prequel.

The King’s Man takes us back to the creation of the Kingsman organization.  It mixes in real people in clever ways, not always historically accurate.   Rhys Ifans steals the movie playing Grigori Rasputin. Charles Dance plays Horatio Kitchener.  Tom Hollander plays 3 real-world related historical figures: King George, Kaiser Wilhelm, and Tsar Nicholas.

The King’s Man stars Ralph Fiennes as Orlando Oxford.  Matthew Goode plays the role of Morton.  Rounding out the main characters are Djimon Hounsou, Gemma Arterton,  and Harris Dickinson.

The main plot is wartime related.  Oxford needs to foil a plot by some very evil people known as “The Flock”.  They want to wipe out millions by pitting Germany, Russia, and Britain.  This explains Tom Hollanders roles as he plays the heads of all three countries.  Oxford creates a team to help him stop “The Flock” and in the process, create Kingsman.

Kingsman: The Secret Service

The first Kingsman movie, Kingsman: The Secret Service, was released in 2014.  It features actor Taron Egerton portraying Eggsy Unwin, a brash young man who gets into trouble.

Eggsy  is rescued by Kingsman agent Harry Hart, played by Colin Firth.   As part of the rescue, Harry turns Eggsy into a Kingsman, complete with a bespoke suit.

Michael Caine plays Chester King who is the head of the Kingsman.

Eggsy’s first mission requires him to counter the maniacal Richmond Valentine.   Eggsy has the help of fellow Kingsman agents Merlin, played by Mark Strong and Roxy, played by Sophie Cookson.

Kingsman: The Golden Circle

The second Kingsman movie, Kingsman: The Golden Circle was released in 2017.  It again features actor Taron Egerton portraying Eggsy Unwin who is still a Kingsman.

After a series of unfortunate events, Merlin and Eggsy must go to the United States to track down an ally, in the form of a sister organization.

In the process, they find out something every interesting about Harry Hart, who they saw get shot in the head in Kingsman: The Secret Service.  We also see the use of a virus with the need of an antidote, similar to the concept in Mission: Impossible II.

Julianne Moore plays the villain, named Poppy.  Pedro Pascal, Halle Berry, Jeff Bridges, Channing Tatum and Elton John all have key roles in this movie.
