(November 12, 1929–December 18, 2020): Oscar-winning British production designer whose association with 007 dates back to an assignment as a draftsman on Goldfinger. Hired on by art director Peter Murton, who would become production designer on The Man with the Golden Gun, Lamont moved steadily up the art department pyramid, through Thunderball (chief draftsman), You Only Live Twice (set decorator), On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (set decorator), Diamonds Are Forever (set decorator), Live and Let Die (co–art director), The Man with the Golden Gun (art director), The Spy Who Loved Me (art director and Oscar nominee), and Moonraker (visual effects art director).
In 1980, Lamont was fortunate to be in the perfect position when fellow designer Ken Adam went to the United States to work on Pennies from Heaven. In need of a new production designer for the next Bond film, For Your Eyes Only, producer Albert R. Broccoli did what he liked to do best: he promoted from within, giving Lamont his first shot at the top spot. Lamont followed that success with production designer duties on Octopussy, A View to a Kill, The Living Daylights, Licence to Kill, GoldenEye, The World Is Not Enough, Die Another Day, and Casino Royale.
He won his Oscar as production designer on James Cameron’s blockbuster Titanic (1997).
