ICE CUBES

Contributed by: The James Bond Movie Encyclopedia by Steven Jay Rubin

Pleasure device deployed by stunningly beautiful but treacherously duplicitous heiress Elektra King (Sophie Marceau) in The World Is Not Enough. She uses them on Bond first and then brings them out for her real lover (thanks to Stockholm syndrome), the terrorist Renard (Robert Carlyle). Unfortunately, having gotten a bullet lodged in his brain in an assassination attempt, Renard has no sense of touch and can’t feel the cubes. It’s a vulnerable moment for the character—who would gain more sympathy from us if he stopped murdering everyone in his path. The cubes, by the way, are the perfect metaphor for Elektra, a true ice princess.

Ice cubes were previously used as a torture device by Emilio Largo (Adolfo Celi) on Domino (Claudine Auger) in Thunderball.
